Against this backdrop, we commissioned the Department of
Ceramics and Glass Design at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and
Design to hold a competition for undergraduates and alumni
to create a mezuzah fit for the building. In June 2021, we had the
opportunity and privilege to judge the mezuzot, and we were
thrilled by the quality, ingenuity, and breadth of inspiration
from the entrants, many of whom you will see in this book.
The winning three designs were then further developed and
turned from prototypes into stunning objet d’art, which were
affixed to the building at its opening in the presence of the
President of the State of Israel, Isaac Herzog.
We knew that the best way of capturing the beauty of both the project
and the essence of the designs was to commission Jonathan Straight to
create a stunning third book of photography for us, to encapsulate
our labour of love which has filled us all with immense pride.
We want to thank all the students and the staff of Bezalel who
put so much energy, innovation, and devotion into this project.
It was our honour and pleasure to devise and promote this
open, diverse competition and we hope you enjoy reading this
fascinating book as much as we have enjoyed bringing the fruits
of the project to you.
