Afterword
I am grateful to Magen David Adom UK for inviting
me to tell this compelling story through words
and images. Their foresight in partnering with the
Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design to create so
many beautiful mezuzah cases for a unique
building is inspiring.
The innovation and ingenuity shown in each design
are self-evident, but for me, there was another
dimension; meeting and photographing almost
all the artists involved. Spending time with these
remarkable people and hearing their stories
brought this project to life.
Working on this book has pushed the boundaries
of my abilities. A shiny, asymmetrical glass object
is not an easy thing to photograph. I found the best
way to do this was to dangle the object into a light
box from a piece of thread – the latter edited out
afterwards. So very different from photographing
people, but equally rewarding.
Visiting the Marcus National Blood Services Centre
and attending the official opening was a real
privilege for me; seeing some of the designs used on
the doorways in the building completed the circle.
