Ofir’s main work is the design and production
of very innovative angular ceramic objects
which are produced by making prototypes in 3D
printed plastic and then producing moulds from
these objects. In this way, he combines digital
processes with traditional production methods.
The mezuzah design is inspired by a quotation
from Deuteronomy 12:23:
… for the blood is the soul …
In this work, the technology used for collecting
and storing blood and milk is referenced; as well
as blood vessels, the means of transporting the
blood to different parts of the body.
The mezuzah shape is dictated by the modern
blood bag combined with a glazed texture on the
surface representing blood vessels. Made from
white ceramic, the object also represents milk.
The glaze is made from clay found in the Kinneret
(Sea of Galilee) when the water level had fallen
very low. When fired, it looks like veins. The
lettering is red – the colour of blood.
By using the shape of a blood bag, the design is
intended to give a feeling of softness, like the
form of an actual bag.
