Muhammad’s mezuzah is made from blown
glass and was initially inspired by the shape
of an eye. The eye shape represents the eye of
God, seeing all who enter the Blood Centre
and watching over the lifesaving work there.
The eye serves as a blessing and a warning; we
must all strive to do our best as we can be seen.
Blue and white were chosen as these are the
colours of the Israeli flag, but also because
they convey comfort and serenity. Blue is the
colour of the sky and so represents heaven.
The current design has moved away from
a direct representation of the eye to a
resemblance, following advice from a Rabbi.
The original shape has evolved into a more
abstract form with the colour distribution −
as seen in this example − created when the
glass is blown in a controlled manner.
In seeing his mezuzah on doorposts in the
Blood Centre, Muhammad recognises the
diversity of those using the facility and their
shared hope for a better future.
