Osnat R eic h man
Osnat’s mezuzah is made of multiple layers
of clay, and each one produced is different
and unique. Three natural colours of clay
are used, echoing some of the colours used
in the building’s construction, and
creating a marbling.
Each mezuzah is fired twice. The initial
“bisque” firing hardens the clay, and a glaze
is then applied with the subsequent firing
at 1220°C.
In using marbled layers, Osnat is referencing
layers within our physical bodies, which in
turn represent the layers of the earth. Each
layer has the potential to cover the layer
below it and to stand exposed as the new
external surface. In expressing the idea of
layers which sit firmly on each other to create
a new body – each layer partly embedded and
partly exposed – our past and our future are
invoked.
