Producing this object using
elements of the Land of Israel
adds to the sanctification of
the space outside of where the
mezuzah is placed.
Melani’s mezuzah is made from sand
collected from the Negev Desert and rolled
into porcelain. The lack of distinctive lines
allows the design to blend into the doorpost.
Unusually for a mezuzah, the shape explores
what is inside and outside. When the hand is
placed on the mezuzah, it is enclosed, creating
a warm and safe feeling.
Melani says that producing this object using
elements of the Land of Israel adds to the
sanctification of the space outside of where
the mezuzah is placed.
