The Competition
The Marcus National Blood Services Centre has
doorways requiring more than 450 mezuzot. A massproduced solution was initially sought using an acrylic
moulded design to supply this volume.
It was then decided that it would be more appropriate
to commission something more bespoke for the central
spaces in the building. A competition was launched
with the Department of Ceramics and Glass Design at
the Bezalel Academy, inviting students and graduates
to propose a design.
The plan was to allow the entrants to develop a new
product, enhance their portfolio, and enjoy the prestige
of having their work displayed in this landmark building.
Thirteen artists entered the competition; who all
participated in a special workshop about the mezuzah,
learned about the uniqueness of Magen David Adom,
and visited the Blood Unit, which was just a building site
at that stage. All feature in this book. The quality of work
was exceptional, and following a challenging debate,
three designs were chosen to feature in the building.
Another design was designated as a runner-up.
Magen David Adom would like to thank all the
artists who submitted their designs and prototypes
for this project and for their time and assistance in
creating this book.
