As society started to integrate after the Civil Rights era, Black-owned businesses faced new
hurdles. Non-Black companies began attracting more Black customers, making it hard for some
Black-owned businesses, especially in areas like hotels, grocery, and retail stores, to keep up.
Also, changes in city planning and the growth of new shopping areas hurt traditional Black
business districts. Despite these challenges, many Black-owned businesses adapted to the
changing times, setting up in different locations.
