Alice Bailey
January 31, 1942 - March 31, 2023
Alice Marcella Bailey was born on January 31, 1942 to the late Horace Bailey
(d. 1965) and Hattie Lorene Costella Oliver Bailey (d. 1962). Alice was the
middle of three children. Alice attended St. Peter Claver Catholic School
in Macon. She spoke fondly of her experience attending school at St Peter
Claver, and her happiness as a child worshiping Bailey with her family at
the parish. She went on to continue her education at the former Ballard
Hudson High School of Macon, GA. While in high school she became a radio
disc jockey for WIBB where she was known as “Party Doll.” She went on to
matriculate at Xavier University in New Orleans, LA, where she earned a B.A.
in Economics and History in1963. She also holds certificates from Boston
College, University of Penn., NYU School of Continuing Education, Macon
State College, and AARP. After settling in Philadelphia, she went on to work
for Philadelphia Family Court and Westinghouse Broadcasting. Eventually
she became a Communications Director at Independence Blue Cross (IBC)
of Philadelphia, PA. There she was known for developing health fairs and
her many community outreach programs. Alice eventually retired in 1998
and moved back to her beloved Macon where she continued to volunteer
in the community and became a career development counselor for the
City of Macon. In her later years she became one of the “oral historians”
of Macon where she was interviewed for publications and programs such
as The Macon Newsroom, Middle Georgia Spotlight, Macon Magazine, and
The Macon Telegraph. Lover of arts, music, and Macon • Ms. Bailey was a
constant volunteer and lent her business acumen to many organizations
including the United Negro College Fund, NAACP, Macon Historical
Society, and the Jazz Association of Macon (JAM). She has been recognized
countless times for her tireless dedication to the people in her community,
education, mentoring, and the betterment of all.
