From 1992 to 2017, the number of Blackowned businesses in the Macon MSA
skyrocketed by 368.34%. However, the
number of these businesses that employed
other people dropped a bit during this same
period. This might be because traditional
brick-and-mortar businesses, which
typically hire employees, were closing. The
new businesses were usually run by just
one person, known as a sole
proprietorship.
Now, the percentage of African American
businesses without employees matches the
percentage of African Americans in the
Macon MSA. A similar pattern was seen in
the Warner Robins MSA, where
businesses without employees saw a
massive increase of 843%.
