Openreach works with Morrison Telecom Services to
complete another successful fibre project
Morrison Telecom Services has been working
with Openreach to mobilise 7000THP fibre
broadband in Nottingham.
completion
• Minimising part-completed work, which would
tie up cash.
Including mobilisation, design and build, this
has been MTS’ fastest build-out of 7000THP
to date, taking only 22 weeks.
The team aims to deliver the build part of a PON
from end-to-end in two weeks. Nottingham
was the third city in which Morrison Telecom
Services has worked with Openreach on its fibre
programme.
According to Chief Operating Officer
Pat Carolan, it was also the best build-out for
cost, delivery certainty and efficiency. This was
due in part to the survey and design process,
which involved:
• Holistically looking at the plan
• Carrying out intrusive surveys to make
sure L2C (Lead to Cash) can deliver to all
customers
• Test rodding and roping the entire network,
identifying all civils required followed by
minimising the requirement for civils to reduce
cost and improve certainty
• Providing a comprehensive job pack that
Openreach used to record the network and
create FNCs (fibre node configuration).
Ensuring the survey and design was correct
also underpinned the build aspect of the
programme. Pat said that process of preparing
and programming the build involved:
• Proactively interacting with the highways
department before the build started to
maintain a good relationship
• Planning in all civils by passive optical
network (PON) to be delivered and
enhancing systems to make this more
productive and easier to programme/
schedule
• Having a project team in place to help
overcome issues and working closely and
collaboratively with them – in this case, the
Openreach project team in Nottingham
• Ensuring the focus was on PON
Pat commented: “Working collaboratively to
monitor budget and delivery was important
as having that budget allowed the flexibility to
deliver the right outcomes.
“We gained a lot of joint experience with
Openreach and are keen to continue to partner
with them in Nottingham and other cities in the
UK. We look forward to continuing to develop
practices, systems, and technologies in a
true partnership approach that will support
Openreach in the delivery of its Fibre Cities
programme.
“We have continued the successful build out
and to date we have delivered over 17,000THP
and will complete the first exchange before the
end of September 2019. The joint venture has
continued into a second exchange which has
been surveyed and imminently starting build for
a further 10,000THP.”
