IT update
Written by Andy Lawrence, IT Manager | Magdalene
As highlighted last time, 2019 is a busy time in IT
with a number of core systems being replaced.
I am glad to report that all these projects
are on track with the majority of users
having been migrated to Office 365
already and benefitting from the additional
functionality that this platform provides.
Our users have created over 70 separate
channels (collaboration spaces) and well
over 100 users are actively using Microsoft
Teams and helping to improve the way we
work together. We are looking at training
resources to help ensure everyone is
getting the most from this new technology.
We have made good progress with mobile
device management and are currently
planning a proof of concept for our
contractors in July, with wider adoption
across further business units in August and
September.
Thanks to everyone involved in the recent
ISO 27001 audit, no new non-conformities
were found and we therefore retain our
accreditation. We are busily working on
the small number of “opportunities for
improvement” that the auditors highlighted
in their report. We cannot rest on our
laurels however, as the next audit is due in
September and keeping secure involves
continual improvements in systems and
processes. To that end we will be issuing
new policies to cover mobile device
management and the use of new
technologies in the coming months.
The security awareness training will
be going live in July with some added
incentives to encourage people to take
part! In addition, we will be putting up a
number of posters in our offices covering
topics such as phishing emails, password
security and device security.
First PON in Scotland cabled
and tested in one week
Written by Chris Wilson, Contracts Manager | Magdalene
One of our key milestones in Scotland was the successful testing of our first Passive Optical
Network (PON) in the new Fibre City exchange in Morningside.
Following the network proving of the route on the Monday, we identified some civils that required
completion before we could cable the PON. The work was noticed, safe digs received and the
work was then programmed to take place on the Wednesday.
The civils went ahead successfully and the PON was fully cabled on the same day. Jointing was
carried out the following day and it was fully tested on the Friday.
Our first PON completed end to end in a week!
