midday sun and the lack of shade, we broke
for the early afternoon to relax, rehydrate and
take on a crossword or two! In the evening, we
sat down with some ice cold beer and food for
the evening.

beautician who specialises in medical care of
the body), Anita (the wife of our fearless leader
and motivator), Clive (the only builder among
us) and myself.
It was an amazing experience and we
managed to build Baccy a secure storage
area/temporary accommodation fitted with
a roof, lockable window and door. Once this
was complete, we started on the inside of his
house; digging a trench in a circle for an 8m by
8m area. All of this was achieved in one week!
Next year, we are looking to further work on
the walls for the boundary of his land and
continue work on the rest of his house so it’s
ready for the roof the year after.
We are a small and close-knit group but
always open to welcoming others. We are one
big family and always have a fantastic time,
spending all day and night together talking,
working, relaxing and having a great time.
My first trip to Gambia was overwhelming but
now, Gambia is like my second home and
Baccy is considered family to me and the other
volunteers.
