Ex-Spouse to Blame
for Your IRS Mess?
Probably... I mean, if you have to blame someone, you
might as well blame your Ex! The IRS will allow you to
do it, and if the IRS agrees with you, they may just let
you off the hook.
You need to determine to what degree your Ex is -or
is not -responsible for your IRS problem. The IRS calls
this area Innocent Spouse Relief.
Innocent Spouse was created for situations where one
spouse caused or created an IRS problem and then left
the other spouse to pay for it. This program is often
misunderstood, and many attorneys aren’t aware of its
implications.
However, if you feel like you’ve been wronged by your
Ex (when it comes to taxes!), then it’s usually in your
best interest to attempt to have the IRS provide you
relief as an Innocent Spouse.
Since Congress and the IRS relaxed the rules for
Innocent Spouse and made it easier to qualify, the
IRS has been hit with a virtual landslide of taxpayers
requesting this type of relief. This is not a short
process ... but it can be very effective if you can make
a compelling argument against your Ex.
If you decide to use this method to resolve your
IRS issue, be careful to only provide the IRS exactly
