ALS FAMILY
SUPPORT
2023-24
CONNECT AND
SERVE
Connect & Serve—providing short-term or one-time support in and around the home for ALS families.
Volunteers are primarily from Lou Gehrig’s college fraternity, Phi Delta Theta, on one of their nearly
200 campuses throughout North America.
Florida Gulf Coast
University
Joey Scaravalle,
President; and Jackson
Carlton, Philanthropy
Chair of Phi Delta
Theta at Florida Gulf
Coast were matched
with Teresa and John
Langley of Port Charlotte, Florida. John has been
living with ALS since 2020.
McDaniel College
The Phi Delts at
McDaniel College were
matched with Thomas
and Shannon Fitzgerald
of Manchester,
Maryland. On their visit,
the Phi Delts helped
with yardwork. Thomas
has been living with ALS since 2021.
“THEY ARE KIND, HARD-WORKING,
AND REPRESENTED PHI DELTA
THETA WELL! WE ARE SO GRATEFUL.”
—DAVID NEUFEGLISE
Butler University
The Butler University
chapter of Phi Delta
Theta spent part of the
weekend volunteering
at Thomas Gibson’s
house, helping with
yard work. Mr. Gibson
is a veteran who was
diagnosed with ALS in 2020. Did you know that
U.S. Military veterans are twice as likely to
develop ALS as non-veterans?
Researchers are unsure of the connection
between ALS and military service. Live Like Lou
is grateful for community connections like the
Roudebush VA Medical Center, which referred
Mr. Gibson to the Connect and Serve program.
Rochester Institute
of Technology
The Rochester Institute
of Technology Phi Delts
were matched with
David and Johnna
Neufeglise of Pittsford,
New York. David has
been living with ALS
since 2017. The chapter went out multiple times
in Fall 2023 to help with cleaning up the yard and
raking leaves. Johnna said “It’s been a pleasure
having them over. They are kind, hard-working,
and represented Phi Delta Theta well! We are so
grateful.”
