ORCHID Annual Report 2023 - Flipbook - Page 5
This year she presented her work at the American Society of Haematology using the gait standards and
centiles to describe changes in walking measurements associated with Vincristine Induced Peripheral
Neuropathy (VIPN) over the course of treatment. This work is part of a national randomised study exploring
the impact of reducing pulsed chemotherapy during maintenance treatment for children with Acute
Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL). They have also explored alternative performance measures for children
and young people with haemophilia as activity-based gait measurements are becoming less sensitive to
more subtle changes in function associated with advances in current medical management of this condition.
Activity and participation were also a key component within the successful grant application for SPACE: A
qualitative study into physical activity in children and young people with cancer.
As a research leader in Physiotherapy and across the AHP team, she has considered how best to address
research culture and capacity building at GOSH particularly thinking about how to tackle some of the barriers
and research skills gap amongst staff. Lucy and her colleague Gill Waite have developed a suite of short
animations and podcasts to support early researchers. This has been embedded as part of the GLA band 6
development programme and we continue to work with the team to develop band 7 content for a similar
programme. These education packages are available to all trust staff via GOLD and we hope they will lay
the foundations for AHP and nursing researchers of the future. She has continued to work with colleagues
at GOSH and UCL to explore patient experience alongside motor outcomes in children and young people
with Spina Bifida and for children undergoing SDR and looks forward to developing these areas further
through 2024.

Dr Paula Kelly
Dr Paula is a children’s nurse with experience in clinical care, education and research focusing on
the implications of serious illness on childhood and parenthood that has led to questions about
how health, education and psychosocial services can be configured to improve patient experience.
Her PhD, completed in 2008, examined the social impact of childhood cancer diagnosis and
treatment on British Bangladeshi children.
She joined the oncology outreach and palliative care team at GOSH in 2015 having previously been part of the
integrated academic Louis Dundas Centre for children’s palliative care at Great Ormond Street Institute of Child
Health University College London.
In November 2017 Paula was seconded to ORCHID as a Research Fellow in Clinical Academic Careers and held
this part time post funded by the BRC until March 2023. In November 2019 her secondment was expanded to
include a portfolio of research studies as a Research Fellow.
Research this year has included:
