Study title: Optimising parental involvement in physical therapy early intervention for infants with emerging
cerebral palsy

Phill is a clinical academic physiotherapist and mid-career researcher within the field of paediatric applied
health and disability sociology. His research and clinical expertise surrounds supporting parent carers and
infants with neurodisability. He has experience of mixed qualitative methodologies, including; participatory
research, Grounded Theory, realist synthesis/evaluation, ethnography and conversation analysis.
Over 2023, Phill was a part-time clinical team lead for the Community Paediatric Physiotherapy department
in Guys9 and St Thomas9 NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT). In addition, he took up a part-time post-doctoral
research fellow role in The Peninsula Childhood Disability Research Unit – PenCRU (University of Exeter)
researching parent carer health and wellbeing (within the Healthy Parent Carer programme). He continued
to be involved as a committee member of two early career researcher forums; the European Academy of
Childhood Disability and the NIHR North Thames ARC.
Following the completion of his clinical contract within GSTT, he returned to Great Ormond Street Hospital
(October 2023) to take up a research fellow role within the Seen and Be Heard study, led by Chief
Investigator – Dr Kate Oulton. This project is seeking to explore equity of cancer care for children with
learning difficulties and or who are autistic.
PhD Project:
His PhD was a mixed qualitative methods project aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of parent
engagement in early intervention physical therapy for infants with cerebral palsy and develop applied theory
to inform practice. The project was completed, and thesis was successfully defended in April 2023.
