ORCHID Study Day
Our Study Day in 2023 was titled 8Successfully navigating the choppy waters of research9- titled to reflect the
nature of research from our first speaker, an ex-GOSH nurse, Elin Half Davies. Elin definitely took a personal
route on her journey, and was tenacious in seeking funding, finding her supervisors, and pulling it all together
before we have the amazing NIHR that has made that path much smoother for many.
We know now from Jo Cooper, Head of Nursing Research (Research Transformation), CNO Policy and
Strategy Unit - Nursing Directorate, NHS England, that the pathway can now be experienced very differently,
that we have research leadership at many levels, and change is happening.
We heard from both internal and external speakers about their journeys, but in the main the highlight was
the breadth of research being undertaken at GOSH. There are still choppy waters out there, but there is
much better signposting and support structures that guide clinicians wanting to take a clinical academic
pathway.
Thank you to Polly Livermore, Ian Simcock, and Faith Gibson who worked behind the scenes on this
programme. Thank you also to https://www.katiechappell.com/live-illustration for our illustrations.
