After my master’s, I discovered "Marvelous Designer" in 2016,
which is a digital fashion software.
There were no tutorials back then, so I had to teach myself
everything from scratch. But to fully utilize the software, I realized
I needed basic pattern drafting skills, so I enrolled in a sewing
class.
That’s how I started my journey into digital fashion. Fast-forward
to 2018, and after returning to Nigeria, I established Quirky
Couture, which I proudly claim is Africa's first digital fashion
brand.
Tell us about your current projects in digital fashion and the
metaverse.
I’ve been involved in several projects, but one of the most exciting
ones is bringing digital fashion into Africa through Announce, a
digital fashion team.
We’re working to create a platform for African designers to
showcase their work in the metaverse. I’ve been recognized as a
pioneer in this space, and we’ve done virtual fashion shows like
Digital Fashion Week New York in 2021 and 2022.
Unfortunately, technology still has limitations, and some of our
grand ideas haven’t always come to fruition, but we’re pushing
forward.
How do you see the future of fashion and technology
intersecting?
The future is all about sustainability and inclusivity. Technology
can help us drive sustainable practices in fashion, and with Web
3, there’s a way to ensure transparency and fairness. Fashion
industries, especially luxury fashion, often exploit resources
without giving back to the communities they source from. With
blockchain technology, we can ensure accountability. The
metaverse is also a space where we can redefine fashion
standards and promote more diverse, inclusive representations.
