Advice
with Kate Kamoshita
I was diagnosed with ADHD at 34 years old, which was
life-changing for me. I create courses to help others like
me who were diagnosed late, misdiagnosed or simply
those who want to learn more about ADHD with sciencebased factual resources. I take important ADHD topics
and break them down into bite-sized educational pieces. I
have an MA in International Education from Sophia
University in Tokyo, Japan, and a Youth Development
Specialist Certification from Michigan State University. I
am a forever student with a passion for learning, teaching
and helping others experience the joy of learning.
Any advice on traveling with kids
who are ADHD when you’re ADHD?
Travel with an ADHD family. Let the
chaos begin! Ok so I would say have a
loose plan and explain that to your
family when traveling (and remind
them throughout the day). For
example, if you have to catch a flight
be sure to pack the day before as
much as possible and then clearly
explain to your children what you will
be doing (we will take a bus to a train
etc). Although time blindness and
other ADHD traits will get your family
frustrated during a travel plan, if you
can remind them where you are in the
process it can help them better
visualize the end goal.
Another travel tip is to make sure each

ADHDer has their own backpack with
their own ADHD tools (think fidgets,
eye masks, headphones, pens, etc).
I have my children and I pack an
arrangement of things we need on
hand and enough diversity of things to
do from books to snacks so that we
can usually handle any emergency.
Lastly, traveling with ADHD has two
extremes. There’s the excitement and
dopamine of NEW adventures, but
also the anxiety and restlessness of
not having a clear schedule or having
to remember so many things (packing,
schedules, a new language) so the
most important tip is to schedule in
REST and TRANSITION times in
whatever plans you make. Don’t forget
sunscreen and try to download some
shows or music in case you have no
internet connection! Safe travels!
