“Biochar is like wine” -Suzanne Allaire
As many wines as producers - even one
producer makes different kinds of wine,
you want a red malbec wine for a nice
piece of meat and a light chardonnay accompanying your 昀椀sh. It is the same principle with Biochar.
Source and application need to 昀椀t together.
The waste to be pyrolysed depends on the environment
and application of the end material.
The main objective was to use it for the vessel/object,
which in the end would dissolve in urban and rural green
spaces ( nonagricultural ) such as gardens, community
spaces, outdoor gallery spaces, etc. This is why I chose
the materials immediately around me in the field at El
Prat, which were made of various compositions to be
able to compare the specific structure and properties.
In the grand scheme, pyrolisis is a very efficient and sustainable way of stabilising large amounts of agricultural
waste, such as crop yield and residues, in order to replace
the “traditional” way of burning waste on-field or using it
as poor fuels in the remote villages of low-income countries.
To start the project, I focused on the local material residues and parts present at Cal Negre and surrounding El
Prat.
I experimented with various materials and was exposed
to a variety of characteristics depending on process, temperature, and feedstock.
Nevertheless, I had to experiment with various materials
to understand the nature of the process and transformation of the material, the differences in properties, and
potential material composites.
