COVID-19
LOCKDOWN
March 2020, Covid-19 shook the World!
No-one would have believed the impact the virus would cause to disrupt
our lives. Sadly, many suffered devastating consequences with loss of
lives and livelihoods.
With our business, teaching an activity&it seemed the Government did not
consider our sector to be of any importance. A child having limited social
connection, not being physical for a long period of time would negatively
impact both physical and mental wellbeing&it could not have been more
important. Unlike the majority of martial arts groups, we are a registered
company. Not having business premises as we teach throughout schools /
venues, we received no financial help other than bounce back loans so it
was stressful to say the least!
The first lockdown happened and we knew we had to instantly react. We
discovered ZOOM, updated our computer processors, researched studio
lighting and Chief Instructor Steve Moore was soon teaching 6 days a
week online with teaching being a one way visual. Realising this was
going to be a rollercoaster of further lockdowns (and learning!) our
technical know how improved, the studio set up was changed, and
thereafter, utilised a two way visual/communication. The zoom timetable
expanded with Instructors Lyle Moore and Anisha Mistry jumping on board
to help with the teaching workload. Through this period, we lost over 1100
students. The majority of these students did not participate in the zoom
classes so it was inevitable with months of no training this is where the
bigger student losses would be seen.
We did our utmost to keep connected with our parents / students from
zoom classes, postings on facebook, emails and texts. We were
continually chasing our schools / venues making sure they knew we were
not going anywhere!
Instructors were kept busy completing online qualifications.
With the Government issuing conflicting guidelines, sporting governing
bodies, schools and ourselves were often left waiting, wondering and
hoping!
