DANIEL COX
Barney chose these
subjects as he originally
wanted to go on to
study Physics at degree
level. However, after
acquiring a place to study
Physics with Astronomy
at university, he realised
that the course and
university life was not for
him so he left and spent
the next year working. He then applied to the
British and Irish Modern Music Institute (BIMM) in
Brighton to study a BA in Music Production and is
now pursuing a career in the music industry. He
has had multiple tracks signed to major publishers
(BMG) and was nominated for Best Folk Production
Music Track at the 2023 Production Music Awards.
Barney says: “I have such fond memories of my
time at Varndean College. My tutors were so
genuine and supportive and I felt I was doing them
proud with every step of the progress I made.
There was so much support available and I’m
glad I made good use of it. To students choosing
their courses, it’s a good idea to pick courses that
will provide opportunities relevant to you, but it’s
more important that you’ll actually enjoy studying
those courses. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes
or asking for help - sometimes you have to fail to
realise how good it feels to succeed.”
Daniel attended the
University of Bath,
completing a placement
year at University of Iowa
at the Carver College
of Medicine within the
Department of Biophysics
and Molecular Physiology.
Finishing university with
a first-class degree, he
began working as a Life
Science Research Consultant for Carmichael
Fisher Executive Search and The RSA Group. He
then returned to his studies undertaking a PhD
at King’s College London whilst working for the
pharmaceutical company GSK. At GSK he works
in the Vector Process Development team as
part of the Cell & Gene therapy group. He also
worked with the NHS dealing with Covid vaccines
and helped in longitudinal studies. He is due to
complete his PhD in 2024.
Daniel says: “I loved my time spent at Varndean
College and it 100% set me up for my goals in life.
I fondly remember all the teachers who helped
me get this far. Special shout out to Chemistry
tutor, John Luton, who I sometimes come back
and see. The teachers helped me thrive and be
my best.”

OLIVE CARR
Olive gained a First in her degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare. She won the
award for top dissertation at her university with her work on captive Dalmatian
pelican behaviour. She now works as an Animal Care Assistant at a Sussex rescue
centre, and has spent three months working at a rhino conservation reserve in
South Africa and spent time volunteering at a vulture sanctuary and in wildlife
rescue.
Olive says: “Varndean College was a great place to study; the teachers supported
me throughout and helped me build important valuable skills which I have taken
with me in my career journey. I would really recommend my combination of A
levels if you are interested in going into any career in the natural world/with
animals, as they allowed me to build my knowledge of science through Biology
and Geography, with Art complimenting the creativity in my learning.”
