SPORTS COURSES
These can be studied as an additional course
alongside their A Levels and BTECs to enhance
their employability opportunities as well as their
knowledge and skills in coaching and fitness.
These courses qualify students to work
independently within a professional environment,
such as fitness and sports coaching. In the past
students have gained employment directly from
studying these courses and have gained paid work
at variety of organisations including, David Lloyd
gym, Freedom Leisure, The Gym Group. They
have also delivered their own sports coaching
sessions for local school providers and coaching
organisations.
GYM INSTRUCTING
LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE
Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing provides
learners with the knowledge and skills that are
needed to plan, deliver and supervise safe and
effective exercise programmes within a gym or
health club environment.
Topics include; theoretical study on the human
body in action, health and nutrition, training
principles, fitness programming and working in
the fitness industry. You will learn how to instruct
fitness sessions in the gym, teaching different
techniques and training methods to clients, as well
as developing training programmes and reflective
performance. This is an excellent course for those
wishing to enter the health and fitness sector with
a wealth of career opportunities.
ASSESSMENT
Professional competency through observation of practical
instructing, coursework, multiple choice exam, portfolio of
evidence.
HIGHER SPORTS LEADERS
LEVEL 3 CERTIFICATE
The Level 3 Certificate in Higher Sports Leaders
course is aimed at any students wishing to develop
their leadership and sports coaching skills to
support the growing numbers of sports leaders
who make sport such a vibrant part of community
life today.
ADVANCED LEVEL COURSES
We offer the opportunity for students to
undertake industry led vocational qualifications
to support their Level 3 programme.
The course requires physical exertion and individual
participation. Therefore, a degree of physical fitness is
essential.
Students will learn how to plan and lead activity
sessions and run sports events. They will work with
children of different ages and abilities and support
community sport activities. The course is a mixture
of theory and practical activity that includes sports
leading in the college environment, coaching
in a range of local schools and volunteering at
community clubs. This course links perfectly to
voluntary work and participation in sport outside of
college.
This course is for Level 3 students to add to their
programme of study in Year 2. Students will be
expected to undertake 30 hours of volunteering
across the year in a range. The College can help in
setting these placements up.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Standard Foundation Level course requirements.
Experience of leading or coaching in school or the community
or a passion to enter this pathway is essential.
ASSESSMENT
Practical sessions, voluntary leadership hours and a written
leadership logbook.
This qualification is awarded by Active IQ and
professionally recognised by The Register of
Exercise Professionals (REPs) and the Chartered
Institute for the Management of Sport & Physical
Activity (CIMSPA), which allow you to work
in the fitness industry. This course is aimed
predominantly at second year students wishing to
enter the fitness industry after college. However,
first year students will be considered.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Standard Foundation Level course requirements. You will be
required to complete an early assessment based on your
capabilities within a fitness environment. Experience of gymbased exercises, including resistance training methods and
equipment.
