ADVANCED LEVEL COURSES
BTEC LEVEL 3 EXTENEDED CERTIFICATE
(equivalent to 1 A Level)
If you are interested in a career in the health
sector, social care sector or teaching, you will find
this course of particular benefit. It provides an
insight into health and social care professions with
varied and exciting links to all aspects of health
and social care.
GRAPHIC DESIGN
A LEVEL
Graphic designers communicate ideas and
information in a visual way using a combination of
text and images.
Our graphics course will allow you the opportunity
to develop a wide range of graphic design skills
using both handmade and digital materials,
techniques and processes. You will explore type,
image, colour and layout through a series of fun
practical tasks developing your confidence and
creativity. Graphic design projects lead to a variety
of different outcomes including type design,
illustration, magazine layout, packaging, poster
design and even motion graphics.
In the first year, you will learn how to use Adobe
Photoshop through tutorials and workshops. You
will also explore the work of other artists and
designers, critically evaluating and responding to
various design styles and movements in order to
develop your own creative ways of working.
In the second year, you will develop your
own project theme in an area that personally
interests you. This can include exploring the local
environment, cultural identity, promoting health and
wellbeing and / or investigating social and political
issues as well as many other personal themes.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Standard Advanced Level entry requirements
Plus
Grade 5 in GCSE Art, Design or Technology based subject
Or
Merit or above at BTEC Level 2
Or
If GCSE Art, Design or Technology have not been taken,
suitably qualified students with a good portfolio of work
demonstrating your skills will be considered. You can submit
a combination of drawings, photographs, collages, sketches
for logos and/or digital design work to demonstrate your
creativity, imagination and technical ability.
ASSESSMENT
60% coursework, 40% external assignment

The course consists of four units; two of these
are externally examined and two are internally
assessed coursework. This programme will be
delivered over two years.
UNIT 1: Human Lifespan Development (externally
assessed, focuses on understanding human
growth and development across various life
stages, including factors influencing health and the
roles of health and social care professionals.
UNIT 2: Human Biology and Health (externally
assessed), explores the structure and functioning
of the human body and its systems, common
disorders, and their impact on health.
UNIT 3: Health and Social Care Practice (internally
assessed), introduces core principles, values,
legislation, and societal factors influencing health
outcomes. It also looks into personalisation
and different challenges and the strategies to
overcome them.
The final unit is an optional unit (details to be
confirmed)

ASSESSMENT
The course will be assessed internally through course work
and externally through exams and research project.
