A 50th Year Anniversary Tribute

At the end of winter, with a hint toward spring, 34 Brothers of
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. would sense a new beginning.
In a community planned, designed, and intended to embrace a
new trend.

The charter members of Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter sought to
articulate the rights and needs of our community during
a time when ours was not the dominant voice,
which included, a cable TV boycott, a Turf
Valley Resort encounter that would remind the chapter and community,
even then, that Black lives and
Black dollars mattered
The surface may suggest ease,
but the reality is work, opposition, and endurance. These
qualities were passed down
from the “Seven Jewels,” who
established and founded this
great fraternity.
The members of the Kappa Phi
Lambda Chapter have always
been visible in both community
and political leadership roles. Early on, there was recognition that we
needed to change structurally to be
even more effective.
To curate and implement a vision there
would be challenges, successes and
mistakes. And undergirded by an unwavering
commitment to serve people, the community, and each other,
they worked.
Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter is committed to mentoring young
Black boys and has sponsored both a basketball team and a Boy
Scout troop. In the past, the also have a partnership with Jack and
Jill of America, Inc. and other community-focused organizations.
Each high school in Howard County has an Alpha Achiever program, and there is an active High Achievers program at local
middle schools. Additionally, we host the annual Harambee Con-
As a result of these efforts, the Alpha Foundation of Howard County, Inc. (AFHC) was established
in 2001.
The AFHC consistently found innovative ways to raise funds for
their essential work, including a transportation service, providing
food at the Howard County Fair, and maintaining a strong commitment to the March of Dimes.
The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast Celebration has inspired, challenged, and reminded us all of Dr. King’s enduring
legacy. Thousands of scholarship dollars have been utilized to
develop leaders of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
