sales tax awarded over $53 million and funded 39 projects. Flatland in Focus investigated those

Stadium Subsidies and Community Impact
The Truman Sports Complex, home to KC’s Royals and Chiefs, opened to the public 50 years ago.
The teams shared a new vision for their future, which would have required city tax dollars to
build a downtown stadium, but voters voted down the proposed tax, halting the team’s plans.
Before the election on April 2, 2024, Flatland in Focus looked at the likely impact of the stadium
plan proposed by the Royals and spoke with the residents and businesses who would have been
affected by a downtown ballpark.
