Detectorists find Roman coin hoard
LIKE a scene from the famous BBC
comedy, The Detectorists, Wayne
Trumper could hardly believe his
eyes.
The experienced metal detectorist
had been searching woodland in a
secret Hampshire location with two
friends when he came across what he
originally thought were silver Celtic
coins.
But, it turned out to be something
even more exciting. Wayne, who runs
Hayling Detect, said: ‘On closer inspection, it turned out to be a denarius – a stunning piece featuring Mark
Antony and Augustus.
‘We decided to focus our efforts in
the area. After clearing some fallen
branches, more treasures began to
emerge. Several Republican silver
coins surfaced, all in fabulous condi-
tion.’
Wayne and friends Bob Ross and
Steve Carter contacted the Finds
Liaison Officer at Winchester, who
promptly visited the site.
All the coins – 17 silver denarii in total – were carefully removed and taken
for further examination.
Wayne added: ‘With plans for further visits, we’re optimistic that more
finds await us as we continue to make
the area more accessible.’
Hayling Detect was set up in 2022
to bring together the large number of
detectorists on the Island.
Wayne and Steve run regular organised digs in and around Hampshire,
and adhere to a strict code of conduct.
They also help to find precious lost
items on the Island for grateful owners.
