Community Update Hayling Herald
Hayling Island’s Businessmen’s Club
By Graham Todd
HAYLING Island Businessmen’s Club (HIBC)
held their Annual General Meeting (AGM) in
January.
It was a time to reflect on the various fundraising events of 2024 and review what worked well
and what we could improve going into 2025.
Your feedback at these events is very much appreciated. 2023-24 was our most successful year
to date. The fundraising events in 2024 raised
circa £18,000 in total.
We managed to increase our fundraising
income up from 2023 while also reducing our
overall expenditure. These funds primarily support the running of our minibus that is available
for local charities and organisations to use, in
exchange for a donation.
These funds also enabled us to support other
local Hayling organisations in 2024, through
small charitable donations from the club. These
included the First Responders, Hayling Scouts,
Friends of Mengham Infants School Summer
Fayre, Hayling Holiday Lunches and Hayling
Island Community Centre.
The AGM is also where we elect the officers of
the club for the coming year and this year Mark
Laing will take over from Laurie Noble as chairman for 2025.
Mark thanked Laurie for his work and support
for the club and looked forward to continuing
this in 2025.
Our planning for fund raisers in 2025 is well
underway and will include our annual barbecue
at Northney Farm.
This year the proposed date is Saturday, July
5th and ticket sales for early bird tickets will be
available in the coming weeks. These can be purchased via our website and local outlets.
Watch out on social media for updates on the
barbecue and other events in 2025.
We’d like to thank everyone who attended our
events in 2024, along with the suppliers and supporters that enable these events to take place.
Without you we would not be able to raise the
funds that enable us to operate the minibus or
provide financial support to local groups and
organisations on the Island.
If you are interested in the activities of the club,
would like to donate, enquire about minibus use
or membership, please check out our website and
Facebook page.
Council steps up support for
rough sleepers in cold weather
HAVANT Borough Council has
been carrying out its Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) to
provide emergency accommodation
for those rough sleeping during the
continued freezing temperatures.
During this period of severe
weather, the council is seeking to
provide emergency accommodation
for rough sleepers to prevent harm
or death due to the severe weather.
The SWEP response is used by
many local authorities when there is
a forecast of 0°C or below.
Officers from Havant Borough
Council’s Housing team have been
working closely with Two Saints to
contact known rough sleepers in the
borough to encourage them to take
up the offer of emergency accommodation and offer additional support for anyone continuing to sleep
rough during the period of freezing
temperatures.
Councillor Amy Redsull, Cabinet lead for Housing, said: ‘We
are acutely aware that those rough
sleeping on our streets face a further
threat when the weather turns cold,
as it has this week. I am pleased to
see the SWEP has been put in place
to protect them.
I strongly urge anyone who sees
someone rough sleeping to notify
the appropriate authorities, as listed
below, so that we can ensure these
people are able to access support.’
If you see or know of a rough
sleeper or a homeless person, and
have any concerns, please contact
