OUR DAY OUT AT THE OLD ROYAL NAVAL MUSEUM
Adel Makkar 昀椀rst came to JDA for help when he had a big problem with his
landlord and found himself homeless. He is now a valued Dcafe volunteer and
an active member of our JDA community, enjoying life with us 2–3 days a week!
Adel Makkar writes:
We had a fantastic
outing to the Royal
Naval Museum in
Greenwich on a lovely
sunny day. We went
there by coach. I like
these trips because I can
look out and see London
on my journey, and this
time I was chatting with Rina who sat next to me.
His body lay in state in the Painted Hall from
5 to 7 January 1806.
After the tour we had a short, brisk walk to Zizzi’s
Italian where we all enjoyed a fabulous lunch! I had
a delicious pizza and sat signing with Martin Binysh,
Steven Fireman and Brinthan. It was very nice —
this is good for my mind and wellbeing.
Thanks to Ann Clements and her hardworking
team for a very nice day!
For the BSL guided tour, we had
hearing speakers with interpreters
which they provided. But the main
speaker, who is Deaf, was Alan
Murray MBE. Alan is a JDA member.
I was very impressed with his
knowledge — he had no paper to
read from! All that he explained
came from his memory and he led
the tour very smoothly and gave us
an extremely interesting time.
We saw the famous Painted Hall,
which is also known as ‘Britain’s
Sistine Chapel’.
The Old College building was
designed by Sir Christopher Wren
and has 600 years of British history.
Henry VIII was born here.
Admiral Nelson’s body was brought
by his naval colleagues to the Royal
Hospital for Seamen (now the Old
Royal Naval College) after he led
them to victory at Trafalgar.
