Enabling professional care workers to
support older people with hearing loss
Engage is training more Champions in care homes and expanding to
support care agencies too
We have now trained 2,378 care home
management and sta昀昀 in 33 care homes to
understand and address the needs of the
older people in their care who are living with
hearing loss.
To meet demand, we are starting to support
care agencies and independent living providers
too. There are still thousands more for us to train,
and those we have trained still need our ongoing
presence and support to keep hearing loss on
their radar.
Their role is to ensure residents with hearing loss
are living in an environment that is accessible
and comfortable for them, and to encourage
everyone around them to communicate e昀昀ectively
and include those residents in conversations and
activities — making sure nobody is left out.
It’s not easy to in昀氀uence other organisations
from the outside, but we can certainly see more
evidence than ever before that hearing loss is
being given its due importance in several of the
care homes we work with.
With more trained Champions, and our expert
sta昀昀 constantly on site to encourage and support
them, we’re ensuring:
These Champions are being trained by us to give
immediate support to the older people in their
care when they need their hearing aids cleaned or
re-tubed.
❤
Older people with hearing loss are better
understood and supported.

Their hearing aids are in and working more
e昀昀ectively.
❤
Information on how to support each resident
with hearing loss is now included in their
individual care plans.
❤
Personal ampli昀椀er kits are used regularly to
enable residents who don’t have hearing aids
to chat with sta昀昀 and family and join in the
activities they enjoy.

Thanks to our brilliant service managers, Padraic
and Andrew, there are currently 163 Hearing Loss
Champions on site in care homes.
