MY 40TH BIRTHDAY
ON 4TH JULY AT DCAFE!
Dcafe Volunteer, Ruby Milner writes:
It was the 4th July — American
Independence Day. At Dcafe, we created
an American theme and cooked vegetarian
hot dogs and chips! Little American 昀氀ags
decorated the café, and Sharon, our Dcafe
volunteer who is a baker, made a really
lovely cake with the American 昀氀ag on it.
Everyone loved the food and looked happy!
But, more importantly to me, today was my
birthday!
The week before, Sharon asked me “what’s
your favourite colour?” I said “Pink.”
This American Independence Day, after
everyone had lunch, Sophie said “Let's go
upstairs to the discussion, we can practise
our BSL receptive skills.” I thought “Oh, ok.”
Lots of people were sitting there, ready to
take part in the American Quiz.
Brinthan asked me to come and stand at
the front with him. I had no clue what was
going to happen. The lights went o昀昀 and
suddenly everyone broke into a chorus
of “Happy Birthday to you” signing it out!
Then Ann Clements appeared holding a
big pink and black cake lit with candles.
I was shocked and did not expect this at
all! The cake looked amazing! Sharon
had made this for me. She is a brilliant
cake maker. She made my cake and the
American cakes… I don’t know how she
does it!
It was a special feeling, and I am grateful
to JDA and the Dcafe team for making this
a memorable day for me.
