5784 — Another Happy Year Together!
New Year Message from Sue Cipin OBE, JDA Chief Executive
It’s been a busy year!
Our “I’m In”
crowdfunding
campaign helped to
raise the funds to keep
running all our services
throughout 2024.
A massive thank you
to our wonderful
Fundraising
Committee, Match Funders, Champions, donors
and everyone who took part!
Our inspirational team of Dcafe volunteers came
from near and far every Monday to bake cakes
and prepare fresh meals to serve at the café on
Tuesdays. Dcafe continued to be as popular
as ever, giving Deaf people a regular chance to
socialise with friends and enjoy lunch together.
Brinthan’s afternoon activities were packed
with people discussing topical world news and
broadening their knowledge of developments in
the modern world. We arranged talks to keep
everyone informed about what’s going on in the
Deaf community, shared stories, played games
and, as always, laughed a lot together!
At our Tuesday drop-in, Jessica, Hannah, Janine
and Mira have helped Deaf people get out of
debt, move out of unhealthy living conditions
to more suitable housing, receive the bene昀椀ts
they’re entitled to, get the care and support
they need at home, have BSL interpreters and
advocates when they are in hospital and at
medical appointments, communicate with utilities
companies and banks, deal with complicated
paperwork… the list goes on.

JDATogether — Issue 48 — September 2024
Overall, we’ve ensured every Deaf person who
turns to us for help has the support they need to
get out of trouble and deal with their daily life.
With the JDA love they are known for, our
incredible team of Support Workers — Janet,
Janine, Lisa and Danielle — have kept the precious
older members of our community safe, well,
thriving and enjoying a good life.
We’ve made funny TikToks and been on trips to
interesting places that we couldn’t access on
our own.
Inspired by Rebecca Clements, we held two events
for Deaf families to get together. Everyone
enjoyed spending time with other Deaf parents
and their young Deaf and hearing children.
Martin Bogard continued to run his popular
Computer Club and our Happy Mondays
group created magni昀椀cent works of art with our
volunteer art director, Caroline Janner!
As always, we enjoyed celebrating Jewish festivals
and festivals from various di昀昀erent cultures and
faiths. Thank you to the fabulous Dan Langholtz
and Clarisse Allshever for an excellent Deaf-led
Passover Seder!
Jody expanded our Family Services team
to provide Jewish parents with even more
expert JDA support. Our Family Fun Day was
a rip-roaring success! And Joanna set up two
brilliant new DClubs, enabling deaf children who
go to mainstream schools to regularly meet up,
take part in exciting activities together and form
friendships, to help them grow up con昀椀dent and
proud of their deaf identity. The great news is
they’re all loving their time at DClubs together!
