HOTEL BARDO
(SSU) offers a BA in mass communications with a foundation in multimedia and digital communication, journalism,
public relations and strategic communication. The degree
program recently went through major curricula innovations to reflect technology and industry advancements.
Changes include the addition of classes that expose students to drone videography, social media content creation
and AI and virtual reality.
SSU’s degree program is accredited by the Accrediting Council of Education in Journalism and Mass Communications— and in Georgia there are only three such
accredited programs. As one of the largest departments
on campus, JMC is home to the longest-running regional
journalism conference, the Southern Regional Press Institute (SRPI), a two-day conference that brings together
students and industry professionals. It has been hosted
on campus for 73 consecutive years.
SSU is a member of the Georgia Film Academy
consortium and offers courses through the GFA a professional organization that collaborates with the University
System of Georgia and the Technical College System of
Georgia. SSU students in the JMC program can learn
from professionals in the film, television and digital entertainment industries.
“We are very fortunate to be able to offer our students
tremendous career development opportunities on our
campus facilities,” says Dr. Juliana Trammel, chair of the
SSU Department of Mass Communications. “At the same
time, our partnership with the GFA provides students
with not only the latest industry know-how, but also great
networking opportunities.”
THE MAGIC OF SAVANNAH
According to Erica Backus of Visit Savannah, one
of the biggest tourism stories has been the opening of
Hotel Bardo. It is “equal parts hotel and neighborhood
clubhouse with social spaces and a private members’
club.” It just opened and predictions are that it will serve
as the Southeast’s newest jewel. The highly anticipated
adaptive reuse project transforms a 19th century Southern Gothic structure sitting at the heart of Savannah’s
Forsyth Park into Hotel Bardo Savannah. Backus says,
“It’s a timeless urban resort and private club focused on
creating community and connection.”
And a further mention of Forsyth Park if you never
have been there. When you visit you’ll see ornate fountains and shaded pathways where locals and visitors
alike gather to relax, picnic and admire the beauty of the
natural landscape.
As noted already, Savannah-Chatham County embody the essence of Southern hospitality. But don’t just
take my word for it. Journey to the Georgia coast and
discover the magic of the place for yourself.
