1837 TREATY WITH THE CHIPPEWA - TREATY OF DETROIT
In exchange for land, funds from the proceeds of the sale of that land were promised by the federal
government for support of schools and education.
1847 TREATY WITH THE CHIPPEWA OF THE MISSISSIPPI AND LAKE SUPERIOR FOND DU LAC TREATY
In exchange for lands, the federal government promised funds for the establishment of schools and
employment of teachers with a provision that the teachers employed shall be full or mixed blood Chippewa
Indians whenever possible.
1854 TREATY WITH THE CHIPPEWA - TREATY OF LA POINTE
In exchange for lands, the federal government promised funds for educational purposes.
1855 TREATY WITH THE CHIPPEWA OF SAGINAW, ETC. - TREATY OF DETROIT
In exchange for additional tribal lands and recognition of existing legal claim on lands that the federal
government was selling or had sold already, the federal government agreed to withdraw some of the lands
from sale and return them to the tribes as well as promised that funds would be paid for educational purposes
to benefit the tribes.
1855 TREATY WITH THE OTTAWA AND CHIPPEWA - TREATY OF DETROIT
In recognition of existing legal claim on lands that the federal government was selling or had sold already,
the federal government agreed to withdraw some of the lands from sale and return them to the tribes as
well as promised that funds would be paid for educational purposes to benefit the tribes with a requirement
that, “the Indians shall be consulted, and their views and wishes adopted so far as they may be just and
reasonable.”
1864 TREATY WITH THE CHIPPEWA OF SAGINAW, SWAN CREEK, AND BLACK
RIVER - ISABELLA INDIAN RESERVATION TREATY
In exchange for lands, the federal government established the Mt. Pleasant Boarding School to be run by the
Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church with shared oversight to include the State of Michigan.
