Impacting Tribes in Michigan
1817 TREATY WITH THE WYANDOT, ETC. - TREATY OF FORT MEIGS
Oawa, Chippewa, and Potawatomy tribes grant land to the college at Detroit to support the education of
their children.
1821 TREATY WITH THE OTTAWA, ETC. - TREATY OF CHICAGO
In exchange for land, funds were promised by the federal government to pay for teachers and training for the
tribes, and lands were set aside for the teachers to live on.
1826 TREATY WITH THE CHIPPEWA - FOND DU LAC TREATY
In exchange for mineral rights on tribal lands, funds were promised by the federal government for the
education and improvement of Indian youths, and land was set aside for a school to be established.
1827 TREATY WITH THE CHIPPEWA - BUTTE DES MORTS, FOX RIVER TREATY
In exchange for an agreement on boundaries for Indian lands, funds were promised for the education of the
children of the signing tribes.
1828 TREATY WITH THE POTAWATOMI - CAREY MISSION TREATY
In exchange for lands, funds were promised by the federal government to the tribes for the purpose of
education.
1832 TREATY WITH THE POTAWATOMI - TIPPECANOE RIVER TREATY
In exchange for lands, funds were promised by the federal government for the purpose of educating Indian
youths.
1833 TREATY WITH THE CHIPPEWA, ETC. - CHICAGO TREATY
In exchange for lands, funds were promised by the federal government for the purpose of education.
1836 TREATY WITH THE OTTAWA, ETC. - WASHINGTON TREATY
In exchange for lands, funds were promised by the federal government to the tribes for the purpose of
education, teachers, schoolhouses, and books in their language.
