Endocrinology
Endocrinology AntiAntibodies
The study of endocrinology is one of the areas where antibodies have been
used extensively, initially in fundamental research and then subsequently in
diagnostic applications. Perhaps the most widely used endocrinology-related
antibody is that recognising hCG, the key protein measured in pregnancy
tests. Other hormones such as ACTH and PTH may be produced in much
higher amounts than would be considered normal by tumours of the adrenal
or parathyroid glands, and the measurement of these by antibody-based
immunoassays is vital both in diagnosis and disease monitoring. Antibodies
recognising hormone receptors, such as progesterone receptors, are essential
in diagnosing sub-types of breast cancer. Their expression has a significant
impact on the choice of therapeutic approach.
