DESALINATION MARKET PROFILE
Upstream and downstream oil & gas account for over a third of contracted industrial desalination capacity in 2017. Most desalination
capacity for upstream O&G was contracted in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Norway, while large refining projects in Nigeria, Taiwan and
China in the first half of 2017 made up the majority of desalination contracted in the refining industry. For the first half of 2018, refining
projects in Abu Dhabi and Norway make up more than 50% of the total, with capacities of 16,800 m3/d and 28,600 m3/d respectively.
Meanwhile, desalination capacity contracted in downstream oil & gas in Texas in the first half of 2018 has already outstripped the US
year-end total for 2017.
Rapid growth in the microelectronics industry is also creating opportunities for desalination technologies. Contracted capacity in the
sector more than doubled from 2016 to 2017, making 2017 the most active year for electronics-related desalination since 2011. Of a
total of 217,000 m3/d in 2017 awards, 45% was in China. This reflects both rapid growth in Chinese electronics manufacturing and
tightening restrictions on wastewater discharge, including specific standards for the electrical industry. Newly built electronics factories
must comply with these standards by 2019 and existing factories by 2021. A further 23% was contracted in the USA, and 19% in South
Korea. Meanwhile, the US microelectronics industry contracted its second desalination facility with a capacity greater than 35,000 m3/d
in two years.
