Aerial Yoga: A Journey of
Transformation Through My
Students' Eyes
As a yoga teacher, every class I
lead is an opportunity to witness
the transformative power of the
practice. But it wasn't until I
introduced aerial yoga into my
repertoire that I truly began to
understand the profound impact
it could have on my students—and
on myself.
Although a lifelong yoga
practitioner (yoga literally helps me
enjoy being on the planet!), and a
teacher from 2012, it wasn’t until
2018 that I started to teach aerial
yoga. I was such a big fan of aerial,
but had saved it for myself unaware
of how popular it would become.
Blending elements of traditional
yoga, conditioning exercises and
with the exhilaration of suspended
movement I hoped my
students would enjoy it too.
From the moment they lifted
themselves off the ground,
supported by the gentle embrace
of the fabric, I could sense a shift
in the energy of the room. With
each pose, each graceful
movement, my students seemed
to tap into a sense of freedom and
possibility they had never
experienced before. As they hung
upside down, defying gravity and
their own preconceived
limitations, I could and continue
to see their confidence soar.
One of the most rewarding
aspects of teaching aerial yoga
has been witnessing the
personal transformations of my
students. From the timid beginner
who hesitated to even step foot in
the hammock, to the seasoned
yogi who found new depths of
strength and flexibility, each
individual has embarks on their
own unique journey of selfdiscovery.
For some, aerial yoga has been a
source of physical strengthening,
not only by being able to develop
core strength in such an effective
way, but really helping with upper
body strength and there are
amazing exercises for legs, so the
whole body receives a real
workout. It is the perfect
complement to a regular floor
practice. For others, it has been a
means of overcoming fear and
self-doubt, as they learn to trust in
their own abilities and attempt
poses they remember from when
they were at school on the
climbing apparatus. And for
many, it is a sanctuary—a place to
escape the stresses of daily life
and reconnect with themselves
