FLOAT GLASTONBURY
What is floating?
Floatation therapy or reduced environmental stimulation therapy (REST) is a
form of sensory deprivation achieved through floating in a tank filled with
around 10 inches of water. External stimuli are reduced by keeping the water
close to body temperature (37C). The room is insulated to be silent and dark,
and floating in water removes all the effects of gravity on the body. This
reduction in sensory input gives you time and space to meet yourself.
Originally developed in 1950's, today's modern tanks are a far cry from the
upright, sea water filled tanks that some brave volunteers allowed themselves
to be submerged in for science. Here at Glastonbury Float Centre, we have
two double size floatation tanks allowing two people to float at a time. We
recommend floating alone for the full experience, however if you would like
to float with a friend, family member or partner, that is also possible. The
tanks are filled with 1/2 a tonne of food grade magnesium sulphate with a
similar quantity of water - none other than the famous Glastonbury Spring water from the George Spring. We
have a dark room and a light room available depending on which environment you feel most comfortable in.
Being situated on a beautiful farm, just below the Tor, allows for a serene landing post float with options to
relax in our chill out zone with a tea or take yourself for a wander up the Tor and along the Glastonbury Way.
Why float?
Floating can have an array of benefits for the body and mind. From alleviating aches and pains, to helping
process emotional events, improving sleep, enhancing creativity, or just bringing a little extra calm to your life.
The conditions within a float tank provide an optimal environment for the brain to move into a theta brain
wave pattern, a flow state usually associated with light sleep or dreaming, but also seen in moments of deep
relaxation and meditation. Theta brain waves foster inspiration and creativity. This can also be an optimal
time for releasing emotional blockages and reprogramming self limiting
beliefs as the lines between the conscious and the subconscious blur
and the brain surrenders into a more suggestible state.

'In the province of the mind what one believes to be true, either is true
or becomes true within certain limits. These limits are to be found
experimentally and experientially. When so found these limits turn out
to be further beliefs to be transcended. In the province of the mind there
are no limits.' - John C Lilly - Inventor of the float tank
