Directions
Teaching points introduce
and explain the subject,
reinforcing classroom
learning and aiding
students to apply their
knowledge in context.
The four main cardinal directions are north (N), south (S), east (E)
and west (W). On some maps, you will see these directions on a
compass rose. This is a symbol that shows you the orientation of the
map. Most maps show north at the top. Between the cardinal directions,
you can find the secondary directions: northeast (NE), northwest (NW),,
southeast (SE) and southwest (SW).
