●
.............................................................................................................................................................
Plan simple, scientific investigations to answer
questions and solve problems.
.............................................................................................................................................................
Is what you found out different from what you wrote on the sticky note?
This activity will only work with shaving gel, not shaving foam.
Yes
You are going to squirt a small amount of shaving gel into a small container
such as a medicine cup. This is so you can observe closely.
No
First of all, what do you think will happen when you do this and why?
Make a note
Write your answer on a sticky note and leave it nearby.
The steps you worked through to carry out this
simple activity are the basis of what we call ‘the
scientific method’. This is the process scientists
work through when carrying out their work.
Talk about what you have written with a friend.
Does your friend agree or disagree with you?
Now do the activity.
Squirt some shaving gel into the container and watch it closely.
What happens? Write or draw.
The scientific method
There are five steps in the process of the scientific method. To help you to
remember, you can think of them as a Science Star.

Term 1 Unit 1 Forces and work
Learning objectives
●
Demonstrate that magnetism is a non-contact force; it works at
a distance.
●
Demonstrate that some materials are magnetic, while others are not.
1 Collect ten objects made from different materials.
Use a magnet to sort them into two groups: magnetic and not magnetic.
Put your answers into the table below.
Object
Material
Magnetic?
Not magnetic?
Reinforces learning and scientific discovery
with activities focused on process skills
and science practices.
2 What do you notice about the objects in your table that are magnetic?

3 Magnetism is a non-contact force. What does that mean?
