YOU ASK,
WE ANSWER
Is a 1-piece coverall safer than
2-piece jacket and trousers?
When a Jacket and Trouser is worn in
combination with each other, the levels of
protection are generally the same as a
Coverall. Some sites specify that a Coverall
should be worn, quite simply because if a
Jacket was provided it could be removed and
result in the wearer being unprotected. Many
wearers in the Fuel Distribtion industry prefer
the Jacket/Trouser combination as it lends
itself better to drivers who are in and out of
their cabs during their working day.

What does FR, AS and ATEX mean?
The terms which are often used to describe
Oil Terminal specification workwear are FR/
AS and the word Atex is sometimes used. The
term means flame retardant and antistatic,
which is the minimum recommended level of
protection for use in a flammable or explosive
environment. The flame retardancy of the
garment means that the fabric does not burn
or melt in a flashfire and the anti-static
properties mean that static electricity will not
build up and cause an ignition. Atex standards
do not refer to clothing but electrical
equipment which is manufactured in such a
way that a spark is not produced when the
product is switched on or used.

Why is FR AS Workwear more
expensive than normal workwear?
Flame Retardant (FR) Workwear is more
expensive than normal workwear for two main
reasons. Firstly, to achieve the Flame
Retardant properties, the fabrics are either
treated with a chemical (Treated FR) or it is
produced using synthetic yarns (Inherent FR).
Secondly, as the 昀椀nished product the fabrics
are used in are classed as Protective Clothing,
the fabrics have to be certi昀椀ed to extensive
CE/UKCA standards for which there are
signi昀椀cant initial testing and annual costs.
