Major Crimes Division
The Hartford Police Department’s Major Crimes Division
has the responsibility of investigating serious crime and
providing court testimony to bring offenders to justice.
The Major Crimes Division is divided into two investigative areas, Crimes against Persons and Crimes against
Property. Crimes against Persons detectives investigate
violent acts, including homicides, serious assaults, robberies, and certain domestic violence incidents. Crimes
against Property detectives investigate non-violent offenses such as burglaries, arson, fraud, and pattern larcenies.
The Hartford Police Major Crimes Division achieved a
clearance rate of 76% in 2020 homicide cases, which exceeds the national average of 61.4% (2019 FBI Statistics).
In addition to investigating current homicide cases, the
Major Crimes Division Cold Case Unit investigates homicide cases from prior years. Two Major Crimes Division detectives are assigned to the Cold Case Unit which
works out of the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney.
These detectives leverage partnerships with other agencies, including the CT Forensic Science Laboratory, the
Connecticut Department of Corrections, the Connecticut State Police, and others.
The Major Crimes Division also has a Domestic Violence
Unit, with a detective dedicated to investigating domestic
violence incidents. The Domestic Violence Unit works in
collaboration with Patrol Division officers and Domestic
Violence Response Unit officers on their cases. The Domestic Violence Unit is supported by a social worker from
the Interval House who acts as a liaison between the organizations.

The Major Crimes Division works in conjunction with the Crime Scene Division, Violent Crimes Unit, and the
Patrol Division. The Major Crimes Division is currently staffed by one lieutenant, three sergeants, and twenty-two
detectives.
