Traffic Enforcement Totals:
Traffic Division
The goal of the Hartford Police Department’s Traffic Division is to promote traffic safety, while maintaining the
smooth flow of traffic and parking availability. The Traffic Division focuses its enforcement on core moving violations that have an impact on the safety of pedestrians and other drivers. Their enforcement focus is on seat belt,
distracted driving, speeding, operating under the Influence (OUI), and other moving violations involving stop
sign and traffic light violations.
The Traffic Division has a Traffic Crash Unit that
responds to traffic crashes throughout the City.
The Unit officers respond to crashes ranging from
minor incidents to serious crashes with injuries.
They also provide important assistance to the
Crime Scene Division during many fatal crash
investigations. The officers assigned to the Traffic Crash Unit are able to efficiently handle crash
incidents due to their experience and training. In
2020, the Traffic Crash Unit responded to and investigated 735 crash incidents.
In September 2020, the Hartford Police Department was recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)
for making the most OUI related arrests out of any municipality in the State of Connecticut. Sergeant Johnny Suarez and Officer Timothy Budwitz also received individual awards at the MADD Ceremony. Recently, the Traffic
Division was awarded a $300,000 grant to enhance our OUI enforcement efforts.
