emission of pollutants are considered, as is the reduction of
waste generation and water consumption. Hankook performs regular environmental impact assessments along the
product lifecycle, in order to quantitively and qualitatively
evaluate improvements in environmental protection, and to
determine any further measures necessary.
Focus on the full value chain
Like the automotive industry and all suppliers, Hankook is
reducing emissions along the entire value chain. This means
keeping an eye on the certification of all suppliers, as well as
the use of products throughout their lifecycle and beyond,
up to the point when they are environmentally recycled or
reintroduced into the circular economy.
Excellent recommendations from independent institutions
Independent institutions also regularly confirm that Hankook acts in exemplary fashion with regard to sustainability:
for example, Hankook has received approval from the
Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near-term
2030 greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals and net-zero
target by 2050, helping the company gain momentum in
the realization of its ‘2050 Carbon Neutrality Roadmap’.
SBTi is a global initiative that supports companies in setting
targets that are in line with the latest climate science, including the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement – limiting global average temperature increase to 1.5.
Hankook Tire’s approval by the SBTi for these targets is a
significant move and is the first time in the Korean tire industry that a company has set itself the challenge of reaching
net zero by 2050 based on the SBTi Net Zero standard.
Roughly 6,900 companies around the world are participating in SBTi, with 27 Korean companies including Hankook
Tire receiving approval.
Hankook also received the coveted ISCC PLUS certification
(International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) for its
European production plant in Rácalmás (Hungary). This extraordinary effort confirms the company’s consistent commitment to sustainability, innovation and conservation. For
example, in using sustainable materials in the iON tyre
range, which is designed for electric vehicles, the tyre maker
plans to intensify its activities to achieve CO2 neutrality and
save resources in the future.
