Year 6: Full Lesson Plan - Manual / Resource - Page 4
Y6 Science Lesson Plan: Fascinating Functions
Timing
Teaching activity
5 mins
Ask children to discuss in pairs how exercise might affect
the heart. Share the information on slide 13 to the class,
then ask pupils to adapt their heart model to show a
heart that has been strengthened by exercise.
Teacher notes
Repeat this process using the following slides which
cover diet and drug use (cigarettes).
10 mins
Applying our knowledge
Ask the children to think critically using what they know
to discuss in their groups the hearts of the record
breakers they are introduced to on slides 18, 19 and 20.
Share feedback from the groups as a class and ensure
children have made the correlation between exercise,
diet and drugs on the way the human heart functions.
This could be done as a
whole-class 8raise hands9
activity. If using a simple
call and response, you
might like to respond to
a good answer with
8hands up if you agree
with X, hands up if you
have anything to
add/disagree9, etc.

Assessment opportunities
The starter, paired talk and group discussions provide lots of opportunity for listening in to how
pupils tackle the key questions, demonstrate their understanding and apply their knowledge.
You can observe how well the children have understood how each factor affects the human heart
by looking at the 3D models the children have made and asking them to explain what they have
done and why.
Suggestions for extending learning
Pupils could explore how lifestyle factors affect a different system within the human body, such
as the muscular or skeletal systems.
Pupils could go on to explore how specific drugs affect the heart, comparing, for example,
alcohol and cigarettes.
Home learning opportunities
Pupils can consolidate their learning using the Healthy Hearts Crossword.
