Y6 Science Lesson Plan: Fascinating Functions

Teaching activity
Teacher notes
The heart of the matter
Tell the pupils that they will be looking more closely at
how lifestyle factors impact the human heart and how it
functions.
Explore the information and diagrams on slides 7 and 8
to help pupils understand the way the heart looks and
works, and its role as part of the circulatory system.
5 mins
Brain break!
Introduce the plank position exercise to the children and
challenge them to try it. Then reveal the world record for
the longest abdominal plank position (male).
You might like to do this
activity outside or in the
hall - if so, you9ll need
manual stopwatches.
Be mindful that some
children may not be
comfortable trying this
activity.
Circulatory charades
Explain to the class that they are going to act out the
way the heart functions.
10 mins
Select children to be the 8heart9, the 8lungs9 and the
8body9. Hand out the relevant Circulatory Charades
Cards. Recreate the diagram in the 8heart pack9 to mimic
the circulatory system between the heart and lungs, and
the heart and body.
This can be done in the
classroom, but you may
wish to carry it out on a
playground or in a school
hall.
Pupils act as veins or capillaries and pass the card saying
8deoxygenated blood9 through to the lungs, the heart,
the body, etc., then exchange it for the 8oxygenated9
card.
30 mins
Exercise, diet, drugs and the heart
Pass out the red and white modelling clay to pairs of
children. Explain to pupils that they9re going to explore
more about how lifestyle factors impact the way the
body functions with specific reference to how they
impact the heart, and the circulatory system.
Spend around 10 minutes on each lifestyle factor.
Ask pupils to work in pairs to create a model of a heart
using the image on the board for reference.
