They should then edit their article and make
improvements to the content, grammar, vocabulary,
spelling and punctuation, as appropriate.
The articles could be typed up on computers or laptops,
and children can focus on font sizes for headings and
paragraph spacing, etc. This would also support pupils
with the editing process, as they can use spellcheck to
make corrections.
Pupils could use
dictionaries to check the
spelling of words.

Assessment opportunities
Teachers can assess learners’ current knowledge of journalistic reports, as well as their
understanding of what journalism is as a whole.
During the annotation portion of the lesson, teachers can assess how well pupils already know
key writing and grammatical features through input from the learners, and further questioning.
Children can utilise the Writing Checklist to self-assess and see if they have met lesson
expectations throughout the writing portion of the lesson.
Children can carry out further reflections through peer review in the plenary. They can also take
on positive and constructive criticism from their peers during the plenary.
Suggestions for extending learning
Pupils could have a try at some of the other records for kids (under 16s) then write reports on
each other’s efforts.
Children could rewrite their report in a different style, like a diary or a biography.
The class could use these two achievers as inspiration for some drama work. They could hot seat
as Preet Chandi, Dave Walsh or any other world record breakers, and interview each other.
Children could explore another method of sharing news or journalism, such as recording a
podcast, or making a video.
Home learning opportunities
Children can take the Crossword home with them to practise some of their new spellings.
Children could explore the Guinness World Records website and choose another inspirational
achiever to research and write about. Pupils could then present their research to the class.
