Y6 English Lesson Plan: Junior Journalists
Timing
Teaching activity
Teacher notes
Encourage pupils to work in small groups to read and
discuss the Information about Dave Walsh. Encourage
them to make notes about him as they read the
information.
Writing:
Plan writing by identifying the audience for and
purpose of the writing, selecting the appropriate form
and using other similar writing as models for their own
Use further organisational and presentational devices
to structure text and to guide the reader [for example,
headings, bullet points, underlining]
50 mins
Now, ask children to plan their own journalistic report on
Dave Walsh’s story, using their Article Planner. They can
complete the factual notes on the left-hand side, then
think about what each of their three main sections about
Dave will focus on in their article.
Bring up the checklist of things they can include in their
report on the Lesson Presentation.
Remind children to tick off the items on their Writing
Checklist as they go to ensure they have met the
learning objectives.
You might like to select
specific items from the
Writing Checklist for
pupils working at
different levels to focus
on in their writing.
Decide whether any of
the pupils would benefit
from using the Article
Writing Template for
their piece of writing.
The boxes on the sheet
can be used for quotes.
Consider whether some
children (or even the
whole class) might
benefit from writing
their articles digitally.
Writing:
Edit and evaluate by assessing the effectiveness of
their own and others’ writing
15 mins
Ask children to share their reports with a partner,
showing them how they have met items on the checklist.
Ask each child to think of any more exciting words their
partner could use to improve their writing and any
features they may have missed that they could have
included.

You might provide
suggested vocabulary
for pupils to include in
